Using the Note Field in Modules Setting

The relevant transcript for this video is found here:

using the note field in module settingHey there, Joomla fans. Tim Davis here. I'm a Joomla fan too. Thanks for tuning in to Maintenance Monday Live Stream here on the Basic Joomla Tutorials channel.

Today the topic I want to talk about is a really simple one but it's one that can save some time: use the note field in the modules settings. So why don't we head on over to the channel and we will see what I'm talking about.

Here we are in the Basic Joomla admin area and I'm going to go to "Extensions" and "Modules" and what I want to show you is how you can add notes to modules, little reminders of what each module does. This is especially useful when you are using multiple versions of the same module, maybe assigning them to different templates or template positions or different menu items. As you get a list of modules it can start to get confusing about which does what, especially if you're showing the titles of the modules.

Let's look at this page on the basicJoomla.com site. In the right-hand column here, I have two “subscribe” modules for two of my YouTube channels, the Basic Joomla tutorials and Cybersalt tutorials. Now, let's go back and look at these modules, here at the bottom, here are the two modules: YouTube channel subscribe button, and YouTube channel subscribe button. They're both in position seven. Now if I wanted only one of these to show up on certain menu items or in certain positions on different templates on a more complex site, I'd be hard-pressed to remember what which one of those modules is which.

Now if I were to sort by order I'd know the top one corresponded with the Basic Joomla tutorials. But using the note field is a much easier way, and it'll help you manage and maintain your site, save you time hunting and pecking and being confused.

As you can see I've got a list of modules that are unpublished, that I'm going to use in the future, also there's no descriptions here. Let's go ahead and add a description. I'm going to go in this first one. We'll see which one it is: YouTube channel subscribe button, and I have JavaScript in here, it's showing the code view and the channel is Basic Joomla. I'm going to go down here to the note field, "add an optional note to display in the module manager," and I'm just going to put "YouTube subscribe Basic Joomla" then save and close. Now I'm going to have a handy note down there that tells me what that module is. I’ll quickly add a note here to this second one, "YouTube subscribe button Cybersalt tutorials." Now I can look at these modules and if I want to adjust where this Basic Joomla subscribe button shows up I simply have to just go right to it.

Now those are side by side and you could probably get used to remembering them but as your site grows and especially as you're working on more sites then it's great to have these notes that are there, especially if you're building a site to hand off to a client that is going to be using the site and you want to make it as easy as possible for them, or you may be inheriting a site that you have to work on and you wish someone had done this.

To demonstrate how it can be helpful when things start to spread out, I'm going to go back into this top button which corresponds with the Basic Joomla tutorials. Suppose I want to just put the heading "subscribe" easily using the module title at the top and let that suffice for both down here, I could go to "show title," click show and I would change the title of the module to "subscribe," save that name, save it and close. Now when we refresh over here we have "subscribe" showing up with that, it doesn't say right above at the top there but that's okay, that's good for the effect, but back here in the list now you'll see this module called "subscribe" has bumped up because it's being shown alphabetically, but it doesn't really matter because I've got notes here so that the next time I go looking for it, I can find it easily.

So that's my maintenance tip for today. Thanks for tuning in. Thanks very much for watching. Remember to subscribe and ring that bell so you get notifications of new tutorials and live streams that are happening on the channel every week and leave a comment down below.
